Scrunch Up Your Style: A DIY Wristlet Tutorial

Scrunch Up Your Style: A DIY Wristlet Tutorial

Your coin purse deserves a little accessory!

This fabric wristlet has a gathered, scrunchie-style finish and a lobster clip so you can attach it to your coin purse or keys. Choose a coordinating fabric, a contrasting color, or a favorite print for one more little touch of personality.

I made mine to pair with my Block Party Coin Purse, but you can clip yours onto any pouch with a suitable attachment loop or ring.

What You’ll Need

  • Quilting cotton for the wristlet and finishing tab

  • Elastic, 1/2" wide

  • A lobster clip with a loop large enough to accommodate the finished fabric tab

  • Coordinating thread

  • Safety pin or bodkin

  • Fabric tube turning tool, optional (I like this one - affiliate link)

  • Scissors or rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat

  • Pins or sewing clips

  • Sewing machine and iron

Step 1: Measure and Cut

Wrap the elastic around your wrist without stretching it. Leave a little room so it feels comfortable rather than snug, then cut to your desired length.

Cut your main fabric strip 2" wide and twice the length of your elastic. For example, if your elastic measure 8", cut your fabric strip 2" x 16".

Cut a second fabric piece 1½" x 2½" for the finishing tab.

Step 2: Sew the Fabric Tube

Fold the main fabric strip in half lengthwise, rights sides together, aligning the long raw edges.

Sew along the long edge with a ¼″ seam allowance, backstitching at the beginning and end. Leave both short ends open.

Step 3: Turn and Press

Turn the fabric tube right side out using your preferred turning method.

Press the tube flat.

Step 4: Insert the Elastic

Attach a safety pin or bodkin to one end of the elastic and begin feeding it through the fabric tube.

When the other end of the elastic reaches the opening, align it with the fabric's raw edge. Stitch across that end, through the fabric and elastic, to secure it. Go back and forth a few times.

Continue feeding the elastic through, gathering the fabric along as you go. Keep the elastic flat inside the tube.

Once the leading end reaches the opposite opening, align it with the fabrics raw edge and stitch across to secure, as before. Distribute the gathers along the elastic.

Step 5: Add the Clip and Join the Ends

Slide the lobster clip onto the wristlet through the loop at the base of the clip.

Bring the two short ends of the wristlet together, stacking them and aligning the raw edges. Make sure the wristlet isn't twisted.

Sew across the stacked ends, approximately ⅛″–¼″ from the raw edge. Backstitch several times to reinforce the join, then zigzag across the raw edge.

Step 6: Prepare the Finishing Tab

Take your 1½″ × 2½″ fabric piece.

Fold the two long edges toward the center, wrong sides together, and press. Fold one short end under ¼″ and press.

Step 7: Cover the Join

Wrap the finishing tab around the joined wristlet ends to cover the seam. Overlap the short ends of the tab, placing the folded end on top to conceal the raw end underneath.

Stitch close to the folded short edge to secure the tab.

Step 8: Position the Clip

Slide the lobster clip’s loop over the finishing tab, gently easing the fabric through until the clip sits over the covered join. This will be somewhat difficult. Using a stiletto to push the fabric through helps quite a bit.

Your wristlet is ready to clip onto your coin purse or keys!
