An Easy Way To Make Binding with Receipt Roll Paper
Share
If you love using what you already have and trying slightly unconventional techniques, receipt roll binding might be for you. This tutorial shows you how to turn a receipt roll into clean, continuous binding that feels practical, efficient, and a little bit magical. If you want to have a printable version, there is a PDF download at the end.
The receipt roll method is a strip piecing technique where long, narrow fabric strips are sewn continuously onto receipt roll paper. The paper acts as a foundation, allowing you to work freely, use up small pieces, and keep the process moving without overplanning.
Step 1:
Figure out how much length you'll need for your binding (here's a good binding calculator!), unroll your receipt paper, mark the length, and roll it back up. This is the easiest way to know when you can stop!

Step 2:
Start with one strip of fabric right side up and layer another strip of fabric on top of it right sides together. Sew with a 1/4" seam allowance.

Step 3:
Press open. Continue the process, layering a strip of fabric onto the last strip of fabric, RST, until you get to your marking. Remember to use a 1/4" seam allowance and press open in between every layer.

Tip:
To keep everything nice and organized, roll up the sewn strips as you go.

Step 4:
Once your strip piecing has finished to your marked point, take it to your cutting table. From here, you will carefully cut along the top and bottom edge of the receipt paper using a ruler and rotary cutter.

Step 5:
Take a lint roller to the top, give it a good press, and rip all that receipt paper off the back!

Step 6:
Fold the strip in half, lengthwise, WST to form the binding. Your seam lines will not always match up, and that is okay!

Continue all the way down until you have one long strip of continuous scrappy binding! Roll it back up, and admire your colorful creation.
